  •  didn't keep the secret from me! (8+ / 0-)

from the moment he walked on the stage at last year at the correspondent's dinner, i remarked to a friend how preoccupied he seemed, and said that i chalked it up to the cares of the office.

next, at some other point i said, no, something is big is in the works.  obama seemed so tense to me.

but when seth myers made the joke about bin laden having an afternoon talk show on cnn, obama looked out over the tables and laughed a big laugh with his hand on his chin ... but something passed over his face.

i nearly fell out of my chair and gasped 'oh my god, he knows where bin laden is'.   my friend said no, not possible, bin laden is dead.

so we made a bet.  a really big bet, because we were both so sure.  : )

All I saw was that he seemed quite high-energy, and laughed at the Bin Laden joke like it was extra-funny.

going on in his mind other than what is obvious ... he's thinking, or he's displaying a reaction that is in contradiction to what he thinks ... something like that.

        •  if that's correct, someone needs to let him know. (5+ / 0-)

If he's doing that gesture unconsciously when "something is up," it's something that could potentially be exploited by foes including foreign enemies, as a source of information.

The human brain has a very specific reaction (the "P3 evoked potential" signal that's readable on an EEG) when a person recognizes a stimulus as matching a memory, and this can actually be used as a guilty-knowledge test.  What you described is very similar to that:  a behavioral gesture that occurs when he encounters a stimulus that matches something significant he's thinking about or preoccupied with.

He needs to know about this so he can take steps to obscure the signal in some way (for example by doing similar gestures at random moments), otherwise sooner or later someone who is not our friend will make use of that information in some way.

Also your skills in this area could be highly useful to Democrats in this election season.  For example spotting Republicans lying or holding-back something.  You might want to see about volunteering in a place that can make use of this.

"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.

          •  obama has a few more things he does (8+ / 0-)

that i've noticed, but i'm a little unfocused right now on what they all are.

one, for sure, is that he actually has quite a temper, and i mean that comparatively.  compared to mine, which is much slower being much deeper,  his is very quick to rise and i think it would be very easy to annoy him, irritate him.

but it's like he "notes it" and then it either recedes or he stifles it - probably it recedes. when he notes it, i think his face changes, his eyes change. the eye itself, not his lids.

that's part of what i mean when i say he knows himself very well.

i saw this when he held that large conference on the health care bill where they all sat around that big table.  there was a moment when i think he would have gladly gotten up and strangled eric cantor (i think it was) on live tv.  seriously. he was beyond angry.

lying, it takes no special aptitude.  you just listen to what they're saying.

      •  the extra funny part, the big laugh, (0+ / 0-)

that was it.  you saw it.

you just didn't follow through on your perception, or rather, you didn't let it have its way with you. something like that.

    •  wow, that was *really* perceptive. (2+ / 0-)

That's like the detective who can ask someone a couple of questions and know by their reaction, if they have nothing to do with a crime or if they're hiding guilty knowledge.

Highly impressive.  What did your friend say when the news came out the next day?

      •  the bet went like this: (5+ / 0-)

we would wait two weeks. if nothing special happened in two weeks time, then i lost.  but if something happened -whether it had to do with flushing out bin laden or not - then i won.

then a few minutes later, i amended it to one week, i was so sure.  soooooo sure.

the bet was five nights in a first class hotel in dublin - where i've never been.   : )

or five nights in paris, if he won.

i came home on sunday and a neighbor said obama was going to make a special announcement and i thought 'wow, that was quick!' but i was freaking out, because at that point i was thinking something like 'war'.  a compound in abbottabad wasn't even a glimmer in my mind.

when obama walked up to that podium in the white house, my impression was that try as he might he was barely suppressing how damn proud he was of himself, with a very thin veneer of the sombre statesman-like behavior he felt appropriate to the occaision.  it was like it was a new personal best for him.  "damn, i'm good!"

my friend who was flying that night, woke me with a call the next day saying in a fake brogue 'top of the morning to ye!'

at will, if that makes sense. not like a seasoned detective.  it's more like whether i'm in a receptive space for it.  it's not a mental trait or skill.

and i don't get all the small personal things but i pretty much get all the big news grabbing events.  'premonitions' for lack of a better word,  based some cue, visual cues mostly.  observational.  i observe.
