Would he get positive press if he said something awesome?

I don't seek out Rover's Morning Glory on the radio, but I have heard the program many times due to my proximity to someone who listens to it. I didn't hear this particular episode and have no idea of the context, but clearly what Dieter said was abhorrent.

Here's the thing. This is a radio program that is pitched towards young males, I'd say generally young males in their 20s who haven't really thought things through that much. This makes the comment even more problematic, it would seem; influencing a group of easily swayed people.

I'd like to know, what was the response of Rover, if any? Dum (sp?) and Dieter are often expressing ignorance and serve as foils to be corrected by Rover. In fact, Rover, though not ideal, almost always takes the liberal position on topics that arise on the show. He has referred to himself as being a liberal and I've heard him really hammer racists, in particular, on his show and he frequently defends President Obama. He certainly isn't the best spokesperson, in general, for liberal causes and issues, but perhaps he is OK for influencing the group for whom this station is intended; i.e., young, dumb white males.

Clearly Dieter shouldn't have said what he said, but what was the context? I don't know whether Rover corrected him or not, but I think it is important to know that there are other aspects of this show that might cause some limited harm to the growth of liberal causes if the show is killed off entirely. These people certainly don't rise to the level of Rush Limbaugh or even O'Reilly and their ilk.

I'm not going to have time to comment much more, if any, but at some point I'd like to read what people think about this and whether anyone else is at all familiar with the show.

      •  BTW, this is not a defense of the show (5+ / 0-)

more of a query about the overall gestalt of the situation.

        •  ChemBob, you miss the point (8+ / 0-)

          if a radio host said:

'we'll teach those blacks a lesson by hanging them from a tree"
(I use this example about blacks and their experience of violence and abuse because I understand that people become very confused with boundaries when sexual matters are spoken about.)

REGARDLESS of what audience or what context, that is an incitement to violence and normalizing violence.  There is NO context where it is alright to do that.  Especially if it is a community of people who could be persuaded to follow these dark thoughts.

SO YOUR POINT DOES NOT MATTER:

Clearly Dieter shouldn't have said what he said, but what was the context? I don't know whether Rover corrected him or not, but I think it is important to know that there are other aspects of this show that might cause some limited harm to the growth of liberal causes if the show is killed off entirely.
Limited harm?  So, by that logic and following my example above, we can allow blacks to be hung from a tree in order to provide some benefit to our liberal audience and call that 'limited harm'.

Are you serious?  Are you kidding me?

Abuse is abuse; violence is violence; crime is crime.  Whether it is perpetrated against people of color or sexual orientation or women or liberals, etc.

that weren't even in my brain. Allow blacks to be hung from a tree to benefit liberal causes? Where the hell did I say that the girl should be forced into sex? Listen, I'm pretty sensitive to these issues myself, having a gay son and my GF's son is having transgender issues. What I'm saying is that the show is likely listened to by ignorant young males who are anti-gay and racist due to their upbringing and the show often counters their ignorance; sometimes in odd ways that we might not approve of, and it's sort of gradual and cumulative, but Rover is usually countering it. If he didn't vehemently counter it in this case, then that in itself is awful. And I never said that Dieter shouldn't suffer some consequences. I didn't even say that the show shouldn't be cancelled. I was merely pointing out some additional information that hasn't been discussed in these threads and wondering about others thoughts.

On the show Dieter is a Catholic and he hues to the Catholic party line, except in instances where he himself violates their dictates; then it is OK with him. He spouts lots of BS, including conspiracy theory bullshit, and is usually called out on it and shown what a dumbass he is. That is all I'm pointing out, he is generally cast as a dumbass. I don't know if it is an act or if he truly is a dumbass. As he is shown to be a dumbass, listeners who think like him are hopefully realizing that they themselves are dumbasses for thinking that way.

Like I said, I'm not defending what was said. This crossed the line for sure, but it would make us dumbasses to think that there are not a lot of people out there who do think like this and need to be corrected. What I'd actually like to know is whether or not he was upbraided on the air by the other show members.

Again, this is not a defense, but curiosity.

    •  What if instead of this? (7+ / 0-)
And it's already starting--WMMS' Facebook was full of posts from people demanding that Dieter be fired, but as of this morning, those posts have been scrubbed.

What if we filled the Facebook page of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer?  NBC affiliate channel 3, ABC channel 5, CBS Action 19, and FOX channel 8?

Will the Lamestream media pay attention then?
