and I agree with every word.  I've heard similar stories so many times (and lived my own) that it just makes me tired.  As other commenters have said, it doesn't matter what Jane Doe's history was -- the evidence was clear.  An unconscious person is simply incapable of giving consent.  But... rape culture is based on the assumption that women don't have the power to give or withhold consent -- the power is men's to take.  And it stuns me when people (mostly guys, but a lot of women too) are surprised that "ordinary" men are capable of perpetrating this sort of crimes.  After all, most of the women in the world are second-class citizens, or less than second-class citizens.  Rape is the rule, not the exception, and in many countries so is femicide. The preponderance of evidence seems to point in only one direction:  most men don't give a shit about women, except insofar as women please, or don't please them.  And, if you're a guy, don't get all huffy here.  Maybe you're an exception to the rule.  But maybe you're not -- what are you doing, personally, to ensure that my sisters are safe, that their children are safe? I've heard lots of men talk the talk, but clearly not enough are doing the walk because there isn't any less rape today than before the advent of the Sensitive Guy. And, yeah, I'm both pissed off and tremendously cynical, but it's only because I've spent the last 50 years dealing with the crap that the majority of men seem perfectly happy to sling at most women. I'll be more charitable when you've got your goddamned feet off the back of our necks.
