  •  I know all about it (0+ / 0-)

but I dont recall the part where we joined the Brits in storming an embassy.

The Shah was a bad bad bad man and we should have never supported him.  He fits our normal track record of choosing the wrong guy.  Of course the Soviets, Brits, French, etc were not much better but that should not be our standard.

we earned scorn for supporting the Shah but that doesnt make it ok to violate one of the oldest "rules" of diplomacy.

    •  Of course storming the embassy wasn't "okay," (0+ / 0-)

but the fact is that the Iranian government was still in a state of flux. The religious fundamentalists hadn't taken over yet. Ghotzbade was the premier, I think. Carter should have been doing everything he could to befriend the democratic, western-oriented elements of the new government, to give it some hand in their power struggle with the imams. Instead, he fanned the anti-American wrath of students and intellectuals, the very people he should have been reaching out to.

The Soviets, Brits, French etc. didn't overthrow the democratic Mossadegh government and install the phony Shah in the first place. The Soviets, Brits, and French didn't offer the Shah safe haven. Carter completely drop-kicked the entire Iranian crisis from beginning to end. It was his good fortune (and our bad luck) that the initial hostage taking created a temporary unity here that stalled Kennedy's primary campaign. It was impossible for Ted to speak an ill word about Carter in the beginning weeks of the crisis.

Of course, as Carter's incompetence and futility dragged on, (thanks to the conniving of Reagan with the Iranians), the hostage taking transformed from lucky charm to albatross. Overall, Carter handled the Iranian revolution about as deftly as he handled the economy and the Soviets.

If I knew it was comin', I could pull a jet plane.--Reggie Jackson
