As much as both of my parents would have loved to have a Ward and the Beav, or a Brady Bunch family, they didn't, and they pretty much figured it out from the get go.   That doesn't mean that Dad really didn't deep down want his son to be a ball playing, gun toting, camo wearing, red-necked bubba for a son. And it didn't mean that he didn't try his best to expose me to those things and try and generate some level of interest in them.

Needless to say it didn't quite pan out that way.    And while Dad was never one to flinch when it came to disciplining his kids, I can honestly say that we were never spanked for being who we were.   And quite frankly, I can easily envision my Dad spelling out to Reverend Harris EXACTLY what he thought of his child rearing tactics if he tried to apply them to one of us.   It would not have been pretty for Rev. Harris.

how to interact with their gay sons very well.  They certainly haven't historically gotten any societal support in how to interact in a positive way.  They are inundated with negative support.  I have to admire Dads that have been able to rise above all the negative and treat their gay children as humans.

I recommend the movie "The Sum of Us" for an example of a Dad who gay children wish they had.
