    everywhere, but it's easy for that decency to get overwhelmed by the sea of hate that often surrounds. I studied in Lexington KY for 3 years and was there during the 2004 presidential elections. There was a huge GOTV effort for Kerry and I met many wonderful liberals. Lex actually has a very vibrant progressive population, as does much of Kentucky, but it is overshadowed by the red meat right wing that surrounds on all sides. For me it was truly wonderful to be in touch with so many great people. I am from the SF Bay Area in California and have since moved back here since my grad school days, but living on the ground in KY has made the big swath of red on the map that inevitably appears after elections seem much more nuanced to me. I know there is blue in there somewhere!
