    the China trip. It was HUGE and unprecedented. After the trip, it took several years before diplomatic relations were normalized and formalized, at the beginning of 1979.

    It was also long overdue, as we'd spent a quarter-century pretending that the world's most populous nation ddin't exist. Sort of the way we've been about Cuba, only more so.
