My grandfather was the field marshall who led the Steelworkers Organizing Committee's drive to organize Jones & Laughlin's Aliquippa PA steel plant. It was called "The Siberia of America" due to it's mistreatment of plant workers. J&L, like the rest of the Steel and Coal industry had their private militia, The Coal and Iron Police, who were allowed carte blanche by the government to do whatever it takes to crush any unionizing attempts. What this meant was they had the right to go into anyone's home, beat whomever they wanted, burn down their homes, drive them out of town and blacklist anyone who they suspected was involved in unionizing or Socialist Party activity. They could also kill with the blessing of the Republican politicians who ran the state.

Which means the workers lived in a constant state of fear. They bought at the J&L company store, which kept them in debt. They paid rent to J&L, and they voted for the Republican Party by taking the blue ballot and putting it in a glass jar. They were watched as they voted. If somebody took a yellow Democratic ballot or a red Socialist ballot, they were fired on the spot.

Everything I'm writing here is the absolute truth. It didn't change until George Howard Earle was elected Governor in 1934 and he brought a massive Democratic legislature in with him. People finally got a secret ballot.

The bottom line is that the fucking Republicans NEVER give an inch until you fight back.

Thanks for all the info. It's astounding how vicious those with power and money can behave.
