  •  Or if you really want some Pinkerton Tales... (8+ / 0-)

look up their history as the espionage contractor for the McClellan and the Union Army during the Civil War.

They were so inept at the task that it would have been comic, if so many deaths were not involved. The Pinkertons probably prolonged the war merely through their sheer bungling incompetence.

Their forte has always been simple head-busting. "Mercenaries" is a polite word for it. Ultraviolent thugs and sadistic sociopaths for hire. Bad medicine...

Washington, DC power circles by providing security for Lincoln's train ride from Springfield, IL to DC for his first inauguration.  Pinkerton allegedly uncovered a plot to kidnap Lincoln in Baltimore, where significant pro-South sentiment existed.

Although there is dispute regarding whether the plot was real or not--if not, then an early instance of ginning up fear for personal gain--Pinkerton had Lincoln don a disguise (opponents later made much of this, showing Lincoln sneaking into Washington dressed in women's clothing) to get through Baltimore, which, in truth, did have mobs and rioting at the time.

But prfb is absolutely correct about Pinkerton's criminally-incompetent services operating a spy ring for McClellan and the government.  He consistently and significantly overestimated the enemy's strength as troops were concentrated for battle.  This, in turn, led to McClellan's besieging Lincoln for additional troops--and the materiel needed to support them--numerous times, when he actually had superior numbers in every instance.  Yet another example of ginning up the fear for personal gain (and in this instance, political, since McClellan was a Democrat and ran against Lincoln in 1864).

So war profiteers manufactured all kinds of shoddy goods and Pinkerton realized the real money was in providing "security" services for their benefit and against American workers.

A petty criminal is someone with predatory instincts but insufficient capital to form a corporation.
