You should mention the Pinkerton's involvement with the Molly McGuires in the 1870's.

In the 1870s, Franklin B. Gowen, then president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad hired the agency to investigate the labor unions in the company's mines. A Pinkerton agent, James McParland, infiltrated the Molly Maguires using the alias James McKenna, leading to the downfall of the labor organization. The incident was the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novel The Valley of Fear. A Pinkerton agent also appears in a small role in The Adventure of the Red Circle, another Holmes story. A 1970 film The Molly Maguires was loosely based upon it as well, starring Richard Harris, Sean Connery and Anthony Zerbe.

        Hearings also . . . which I think led to their strike-breaking.

There is a scene towards the end where someone shows his outrage towards the hated coal company by "trashing the store" which sadly is one or two simple shelves of dry goods that miners need to get by.  The pathetic display of goods they can barely afford makes the scene all the more powerful.

Think of it as the old-timey version of breaking the window of a starbucks.  It's hardly going to bring the power structure crashing down.

Having said that, advocating violence in support of a progressive cause is a self-defeating tactic.  Any movement for economic and social justice needs to steer clear of violence.  The so called "black block" of today is just the excuse an oligarchy needs to send in thugs to "restore order."
