      any empty seats. It seems that 2,000 or 4,000 empty seats would be noticeable.

        People streamed in very steadily right up until the time that Pres. Obama spoke, so some of the media reports of empty seats were just jumping the gun, no doubt in some cases because it fit their narrative. A prime example is USAToday's article:

        About 14,000 filed into the 18,300-seat Schottenstein Center, with the arena's upper deck nearly empty.
        The organizers filled up the lower seats first and no one was in the upper deck at all until, IIRC, until about an hour before the Obamas appeared. Then the lower seats were filled and people began filing into the upper deck. By the time the President spoke, over half of the upper deck was full.

        I did a thought experiment of transferring the people on the floor up to the upper deck and I think that would have filled the remaining seats. So I'd guess that the attendance was pretty much the offical capacity.
