  •  Tuesday voting is due to agrarian heritage (13+ / 0-)

...not to mention the Christian heritage of the US as well.

Two-hundred-plus years ago, voting meant--for rural populations--a day of travel to the polling place (typically the county seat), a day for actually voting, and then a day to return to the farm.  As the Sunday sabbath was strictly observed by many early Americans--no work permitted, including hitching or driving wagons--this made Monday the travel day, and thus Tuesday the earliest day for voting.

So, basically it's an anachronism--but one that is enshrined in the Constitution, at least as far as federal elections go.

Many states do, of course, extend the early voting period.  One thing the Feds could do is to make Election Day a federal holiday.

Probably won't happen, as far too many political actors (most if not all of the Republicans) think their electoral fortunes are improved when voting is harder.

    •  Voting would be only on a Tuesday before dawn... (0+ / 0-)

... if the suppress-the-vote Goopers had their way.  For all we know, they're drafting the bills in state legislatures to implement that already.

Don't tell me what you believe, show me what you do and I will tell you what you believe.

      •  One idea would be the extend the poll closing (0+ / 0-)

time from the usual 7 or 8 PM to 9 or 10 PM. It would give people plenty of time to vote, after supper if necessary, and the only drawback would be to postpone unofficial media declarations of the projected winners, which is not a big problem in my view.
