    I agree that they should pay taxes on income which is not directly related to charity, and that we should re-think some of the exemptions clergy receive.

    Moreover, I believe that all workplace rules should apply to ALL nonprofits and churches, and they should be required to pay into unemployment insurance (it may surprise some to learn that they are not required to do that and almost all churches do not).

    Part of the problem, of course, is who owns the church? Depending on the particular denomination and religion, this is complicated. But then again, so is the tax code.
