  •  One way to separate "deniers" from "skeptics" (15+ / 0-)

is to ask them what sort of evidence would change their minds to believing in anthropogenic global warming. Or go down a list of "if you were shown that [thus & so] would it change your mind about AGW?" If the answer is "nothing," or if the required evidence would be impossible or take decades to obtain, you're dealing with a denier.

A true skeptic will shade her/his skepticism in the direction of the preponderance of evidence. A denier will hold onto his/her predetermined preferred conclusion so long as there is any minimally plausible argument that it might be true, & ignore any & all evidence to the contrary.

Keep in mind that AGW is almost a religious issue for feral capitalists, whose ability to make the really big score is utterly dependent on weakening civil society so that it can't stop them from externalizing their costs to the detriment of that society.

      and absolutely, positively nobody else.

The climatology community reached overwhelming consensus long ago. Nobody else has applicable expertise, and in a rational society inexpert citizens have to go with the expertise.

A non-climatologist can be a remediation skeptic or an energy policy skeptic etc., because the choices of what to do about expert consensus are the proper business of inexpert citizens.

But not the expert question. Nobody but the experts has standing on that. Reality is not a democracy or any other kind of popularity contest.

    •  I deny the existence of "true skeptics" (1+ / 0-)

You can not be skeptical that the earth is round, you can not be skeptical that the sun rises in the east, you can not be skeptical about evolution.  To be a skeptic, you have to look at the facts and have a reasonable doubt as to the accuracy of the facts.

You can be an irrational denier of facts, or you can be uninformed, but you can not be skeptical.

      •  Climate sensitivity... (0+ / 0-)

There is some controversy about climate sensitivity, which is usually given as the degrees of warming per doubling of CO2. I could understand that someone might be skeptical of the ~3 degrees estimate. Skeptical, as in, not quite sure if it is correct. In that respect, all climate scientists are skeptical.
