  •  some warranties are only 90 days (8+ / 0-)

The only computer warranty I trust - and have used - is the Apple Care warranty.

If the motherbord fried, it was likely due to a power surge or other electrical problem that would not be covered by standard warranties.

I carry a mini-surge protector in my bag o' tech for my MBP. Yes, I'm more than a bit compulsive about protecting my investment in any computer.

Thanks to everyone who is helping Jesse, it means a lot to him and to all who support his work.

    •  Fortunately since laptop power goes through (5+ / 0-)

batteries, those function as somewhat limited surge protectors prior to the power hitting the sensitive parts.  One danger they protect from is brownouts and uneven power.  Surge suppressors only protect against spikes of high voltage.  UPS (including batteries) protect against inconsistent power.

I had a Dell laptop with a 3 year warranty and when it ran out, Dell called to see if I wanted to extend another three years.  On impulse, I said yes.

Lo and behold 2 years and 290 days later, the motherboard went out. After trying to replace the motherboard once unsuccessfully ( the tech guy came to my apt),  they sent me a brand new much better laptop that ran circles around my original laptop.

      Very good experience with them.

      •  Same with HP warranties (1+ / 0-)

My husband "warranty surfed" on laptops from HP, with them dying just shy of the 3 year mark, for almost a decade.  The last one he bought ticked over four years so the ride was over, but it worked out quite well for a long time.
