    It is one of the easiest ways to raise productivity.  When you have one person doing the job of 2, 3, or 4 others for the same pay - Productivity is increased.

    Profits are increased.

    The last to leave are the hardest to outsource or combine duties.  

    The last place I worked saw the maintenance guy, the customer service, and the administrative people hitting the door with sales and production remaining.

    My wife saw her workplace keeping the engineers, but getting rid of the technicians, designers, and administrative staff.  The engineers were going to be next, the company was investigating outsourcing engineering duties.

    The person to job ratio means that it will remain this way for a while too.  Those trying to reenter the workforce, me, are willing to put up with some extra work to get a current gig on the resume.  Those still in the workforce grumble, but do the extra work because they want to keep their current gig.

    Until the employers have to actually compete for talent the changes will be slow.
