  •  The WaPo piece is pretty long (8+ / 0-)

But worth a read. The "wild and crazy" guy pulled a number of mean spirited pranks - including on a visually impaired instructor.

One venerable English teacher, Carl G. Wonnberger, nicknamed “the Bat” for his diminished eyesight, was known to walk into the trophy case and apologize, step into wastepaper baskets and stare blindly as students slipped out the back of the room to smoke by the open windows
As an underclassman, Romney accompanied Wonnberger and Pierce Getsinger, another student, from the second floor of the main academic building to the library to retrieve a book the two boys needed. According to Getsinger, Romney opened a first set of doors for Wonnberger, but then at the next set, with other students around, he swept his hand forward, bidding the teacher into a closed door. Wonnberger walked right into it and Getsinger said Romney giggled hysterically

      First stone, etc., so forth.

But then I realized that Romney was the organizer. And though he had the ability to charm, he could turn it on and off at will.

There's a lot of cognitive dissonance here because I don't believe someone could have been that nasty. And you want to believe people get better, and the reason they don't talk about it is, they may secretly be ashamed.

But then you get stuff like the garbage bag comment and that's hard to believe.

If someone is very charming to the people in power and not so charming to those he has power over, that is a problem. And being involved in a bit of philanthropy doesn't change that.

at someone else's misfortune and humiliation.

Yup, I can see that from Romney. And I don't think he's outgrown it.

I'm a dyslexic agnostic insomniac. I lie awake at night wondering if there's a dog.
