But I didn't say that Romney and his gang were "giving a classmate a haircut" as if they had nicely invited the victim into their room so that they could practice up on the advanced beautician skills they had somehow acquired on the side. I did say what they did was horrible.

I'm not trying to blow anything out of proportion here but just because it was widely assumed that the victim was gay, that doesn't mean that that is why he was attacked. Hell, I'd go so far as to speculate that maybe Romney wouldn't have even needed something like that to have been provoked into doing what he did, he may very well have been acting in response to something much less controversial for the time but I have no real way of knowing that either.

I will say this: Romney did a despicable thing back then for which he should always be extremely ashamed.

      And that's the problem.

I understand that it can be really, really hard to admit your own past mistakes, especially in the sort of "gotcha" climate of politics, where anything less than absolute robotic perfection can lead to  (or be seen as) total failure.

It takes a big person to admit that you used to be small.

The deal is - I want the President of the USA to be a big person.

If Romney truly doesn't remember this then he's a textbook sociopath and we ought to be finding ways to keep him away from children and animals.  If Romney just can't bring himself to admit he was wrong then it shows that he doesn't have the cojones to be the president.
