and sent him the msg below.  Although it's too late to take it back, I'd still appreciate feedback so that the next time I write one of these emails I can do better.  I'm a bit nervous writing about transgender issues because I'm cis and I don't want to put my foot in my mouth.

I'm a constituent earnestly asking you to support ENDA, the Employment Nondiscrimination Act.

I have just learned that the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee will hold a hearing on June 12 regarding ENDA, and I ask you, as a committee member, please to attend, to hear the testimony, and to consider the ramifications of labor policy that currently does not protect lesbian, gay, or transgender people from termination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender expression.  ENDA seeks to remedy that problem.

I particularly want to highlight the need for protections for transgender people.  In the past several decades, our society has come a long way in recognizing and protecting the rights of gay and lesbian people, but we have not made nearly as much progress for trans people, who simply express gender differently from their birth-assigned sex.

Fifty years ago, the general public widely regarded gays and lesbians as dangerous perverts and criminals, and denied that "being gay" was a valid identity.  Now most accept that gay and lesbian identity is a perfectly normal albeit minority form of sexual orientation.  We are at a crossroads moment of history for transgender people.  As a nation we are slowly beginning to understand that sometime gender expression differs from body type, and this too is perfectly normal for a certain percentage of the population.  LGBT workers deserve protection from unfair termination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, just as workers of other ethnicities or religions deserve (and enjoy) protection from unfair termination based on creed or color.  That is why we need ENDA, and that is why I'm asking your support.

Of course I'm about a billion dollars shy of having a real voice in Congress, but it seems like occasionally someone listens to the plebes.

Thanks for the diary, rserven.  As someone else said, it's particularly helpful to have the committee membership listed.
