  •  I recently had to move back (3+ / 0-)

to Indiana and have hated every minute of being surrounded by ignorant bigots. Race is undoubtedly a huge issue underneath their attitudes, and there is also Fox News/Glenn Beck types reinforcing their prejudices.

I have encountered a few reasonable people since I've returned. I enjoy talking to them, but I just get so angry when I hear people spouting whatever talking point they heard on tv last night as 'facts' and expecting everyone to agree.

After reading your diary I think you have educated me to adjust my perspective. I agree with everything you said--about the state of the country, and the vulnerability of our education system.

So I will try really hard to use reasoned baby steps instead of silent rage the next time someone in the lunchroom says some insane comment about Obama being born in Kenya or being secretly gay.

    Thank you.

    •  Things like birtherism (5+ / 0-)

need to be ridiculed, gently, preferably in front of others. Imagine this:

      Wingnut makes a birther comment.

You say, "Come on, you're kidding, right? The state of Hawaii has certified his birth, he's shown his long form birth certificate, there were newspaper announcements of his birth in 1961. You think this is some kind of 50-year conspiracy to elect a black man president? Really? I think that's nuts."

In their hearts, even most true believers know birtherism is a load of crap.
