  •  Heh, isn't that always the case, though? (5+ / 0-)

The best science diaries on this site haven't been the ones that laid down the law on this-or-that issue, but explained why some of our conclusions are only best guesses based on the evidence we can and can't evaluate.  I do think something like that on this issue would be useful.

there's a different relation to science in general than to religion in general on the site.  DarkSyde has a weekly front-page feature.  There's no one who is authorized to comment knowledgeably about religion.  That's just one aspect of the discussion here.

When it comes to science, people have some basic understanding of scientific method.  When it comes to religion, people, for the most part, understand Fundamentalism and have knee-jerk responses.  People don't think they need to understand the history and theory of religion.  People like their narrative of "the Enlightenment and science moved us forward from religious bigotry," and that's a frame that distorts all sorts of things, but one that provides the dominant story by which people understand their political and moral commitments.

I am completely exhausted from trying to get people to see religion from another angle, and to actually have a fact-based approach to it.  I've been posting diaries on religion from various angles for years now, and it really has not made one bit of difference in the general conversation.  I can only beat my head against a wall so many times.

If religion means a way of life, and life's necessities are food, clothing, and shelter, then we should not separate religion from economics. - Malcolm X
