  •  Metaphor, good people (13+ / 0-)

The thesis is that "eunuch" here means "those males who will not give seed to women." This includes those whose balls are removed, those who will not lie with women because they are celibate for religious reasons, and those who will not lie with women because they love men instead.

Perfectly plausible reading. Keep in mind that the all words change their scope and connotations from century to century, and "eunuch" is a translation, which like almost all of the Bible in English is far from exact.

Clearly the passage refers to monks and priests who are celibate not as castraties, but by metaphor. Why should we be sure it's not referring to gays by metaphor too? Jesus most always spoke in metaphor.

to think that eunuch conceptually included these groups. Words change their meaning. Think of the English word "privacy" which 250 years ago referred almost exclusively to the toilet. in the case of Eunuch we're talking 2000 years. Plenty of time for that kind of semantic drift.

But to go from the possibility of the metaphorical meaning to the conclusion of same metaphorical meaning, with little to no supporting evidence -- that is a reach.

Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.
