    but after you remove all of the religious stuff, in a country that should be secular, a marriage is a contract.  You sign that contract as a commitment to share burdens of a financial nature among other things.  

    In return, the marriage is a signal to others that you are in a committed relationship, which should not have been entered into lightly and cannot be easily absolved, and therefore your spouse should be entitled to the privileges and burdens afforded to them.  

    I keep thinking of visitation at a hospital.  When a person that is in the hospital is married, their spouse has expanded visitation rights and can make decisions about their spouse's treatment if necessary.  This is granted not because of God or the Bible or whatever.  It is granted because the hospital recognizes the contract that those people have signed.  

    The sexual preference and gender of the participants should not matter.
