  •  I would argue that tradition is progressive. (6+ / 0-)

I didn't have problems pulling my kids out of school partly because I saw public schools shying away from what I considered a traditional American public education, the education I received as I was growing up in a myriad of different places (military kid).

It was about the time that we as a nation decided that if we couldn't pray in schools then we couldn't discuss religions at all. And when we started telling teachers not only what they should teach but exactly how they should teach it as well.

I can remember talking about ideas when I was in school, about religions of all kinds, about different cultures and different peoples. School taught me to think and to be open minded. I can remember teachers who followed their own paths and taught outside the box. Those are the teachers who taught me the most.

So, back to your point. It's claptrap to say that tradition is reactionary. Social Conservative thinking is reactionary, not tradition. We need to embrace our progressive past in education and bring it to the forefront once again.

An important argument to look back at the best of what we had and try to recover it by moving away from all this current standardization and regimentation.

I'm trying to say in my piece that as another step to setting education "free" of limiting constraints that we should put this whole compulsory thing on the table and discuss how it changes the dynamic and feeds into all that standardization and regimentation.
