  •  You need Snake Chaps (10+ / 0-)

I bought my old man a pair for hunting down in Texas. Because he frequents areas that are full of great big diamond backs.

    There are several different kinds.

Rattlesnakes hop quite effectively. And they can cover quite a distance--just like those silly cartoon snakes on Q*bert.

I am glad you were quick on your feet. You are very lucky.

I have had some encounters with big rattle snakes in Oklahoma. But in the central part of the state, it's so developed now, that most of those are gone. Mostly what we find are pygmy rattlers and copperheads, and the occasional cotton mouth.

    •  Snake chaps are a trade-off. (12+ / 0-)

They are hot as hell, and take away a lot of flexibility.  And they rub against your knees all day, making them very sore.  Had I worn them all of my career, I'd probably be unable to get through the woods any more.

I have made the choice to do without them, except for the rare occasion where I expect to encounter venomous snakes.  In 18 years of living in Georgia, I have seen five rattlesnakes and a smattering of copperheads and cottonmouths.  Not enough, in my opinion, to dress in a suit of armor every day.

On the other hand, I know some outdoor workers who wear chaps or leggings every day.  It's a personal choice.  Different people handle risk in different ways.

If I have an idea, I will PM you.

That being said, I understand. They are rather stiff and unwieldy. The area my husband wears them in, is mostly sparse scrub. So it's different than a heavily wooded area. And these are not every day occurrences either.

a problem for snake leggings.  40 years ago the woods in the South were pretty open because of landowner set fires and open range in many areas.  Since livestock compete with deer, livestock have been excluded from much forest and the resulting brush and vines can be tough on leggings as you know.

I have always felt at greater risk of injury from using them than not.
