    First, you're exactly right about the dog.  A friend of mine in NM had a small, fiercely curious dog who got bit in the face by a rattlesnake.  She had no money for a vet, but the dog recovered.

    Second, there's some interesting natural selection going on in parts of Texas where they have rattlesnake roundups.  A bunch of idiots go out and see how many rattlers they can kill in a competition.  Result? Rattlers that remain silent tend to survive to reproduce, and those that warn the dumb-ass hicks who participate in such things get killed. I wish I could remember where I read this, but there was speculation about an increase in snakebite as a result.
