    we learned about animals that eat plants, and those that eat other animals, but I never got the "you are a part of the web of life; mess with it and you die" lesson that is of paramount importance.
    OPOL's typically poetic diary reminded me of some connections that I have made in life that crop up unbidden;

    "The Tragedy of the Commons"
    "don't ask a starving farmer to leave a fallow field"
    "population control is a luxury reserved for those who do not need the labor of children to survive"
    "don't sh*t where you eat"
    plus 40 odd years of observing the behavior of myself and the humans around me.

    these things roll around in the unconscious, and prose like OPOL's has a way of shaking some of them loose.
    as to the despair that seems to be particularly strong today; I embraced it a long time ago. My expectations for the human race are much as you'd expect from my comment. we will not fix ourselves, so nature will do it for us. and she is quite thorough.
    As such, I feel I am less paralyzed than I used to be; I am very proactive with doing what I can to minimize the damage I am doing, and working hard toward whatever sustainability I can provide for my family of two. I'm a long way from perfect, and if the apocalypse comes tomorrow, I'm finished by Friday. but I'm learning all I can about a myriad of topics (from repairing things to alternative social constructs to composting to solar stills...)
    I find that is better than the paralysis or mourning the loss of what we as a society have built.

    Class war has consequences, and we are living them.

      near doing enough.  I guess the best we can do is our part and spread the word for what it's worth.  Actually I don't remember if I learned it in school, or if my logical side kicked in.  Perhaps reading helped me too.
