  •  I'll Believe That When I See It..... (4+ / 0-)

Romney has another half-year to pander to the religious right and alienate the Northeasterners who refuse to let go of the notion that Romney is a Rockefeller Republican.  I'm not convinced he overperforms McCain there.  He may in Massachusetts simply because he's the former Governor there, but I have my doubts about any of the other northeastern states.

Overlap with New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, and strongly influence Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine. He's also been practically living in New Hampshire since he left office in 2007.

      •  If PPP's Poll Is To Be Believed..... (4+ / 0-)

....New Hampshire is already moving away from Romney rather dramatically.  My sense is that if he's underperforming McCain in New Hampshire, he will be in the rest of the region as well.  With that said, you're right that the difference between Obama's strength in battleground states versus his comparative weakness nationally has to be coming from somewhere.  My guess is it's a combination of a lack of consolidated Obama support in blue states and most Southern and Appalachian states being redder than they were in 2008.  I suspect the consolidation of Obama support in blue states will ultimately happen, however....and I still believe Obama's November margin nationally will look very similar to his 2008 margin.

I do think New Hampshire will tighten as Romney sews up Republican support, but I think President Obama improves in Arizona, North Carolina, and possibly Missouri, helping to offset any Romney overperformance in the Northeast or Upper Midwest.

      •  Yeah (0+ / 0-)

but MA media aren't exactly big fans of Romney. (And while our WB station when I was a kid was from Boston, I think, other than that we share very little media other than with SE Massachusetts. Aside from the area around Hartford, CT probably doesn't share any.)
