  •  Dunno if we necessarily need new codified rules (13+ / 0-)

but I'm gonna advance a principle here, and make kind of a balls-out statement of belief.
With respect to the administration of President Obama, there seem to be two agenda driven factions here on Daily Kos.

One faction, the one that seeks to break down and tear down this Administration from the left, is dishonest about its agenda, backs away from it, and will not acknowledge this even though it is clearly the case.

The other faction recognizes that this is an election year, and freely acknowledges that their agenda is to re elect the President and defeat Mitt Romney and as many Republicans as possible. I count myself among the members of that faction.

Here is the principle I wish to advance:

That which contributes to the re-election of the President and the election of Democrats downticket, and the defeat of Republicans, is the good.

That which detracts from that goal is the evil.

"It's just that simple", quoth the kestrel.

    •  I don't think identity division is useful. (4+ / 0-)

But codifying the behaviors responsible for creating the division and taking a stand against the ones that are damaging to the community and the agenda would be helpful, because then we could see who was just being slipshod or childish vs. who was actually pursuing a determined course of attack against our interests.  That's pretty much how it works in all contexts: Removing ambiguity from what is expected liberates everyone to choose whether they wish to be a part of something.

but the schism exists; I'm certain you'll agree with that.
You might be onto something about identifying the behaviors, but I remain unsure as to whether codifying them into FAQ would be more effective than handling them on a ground level community norms basis.
YMMV, however; I'll give you that. I just in general don't like new rules.

        •  The problem with pursuing it entirely (4+ / 0-)

as a community norm rather than a staff-enforced rule is that it would be too easy to pervert into a tit-for-tat tactic, and it would be abused beyond all limits by the sort of people who are largely responsible for violating the rules.  At that point you need staff intervention, but if it's not a rule, then there's nothing they can do.

Make this the one and only rule, and the rest will shake out.
