  •  My in-law family is full of them (6+ / 0-)

They resent having to pay dues, and they resent that dues go to politicians.

For example:  in retirement in FL in a gated community, they do not see the relationship between their current life-style and health benefits, wages, retirement income and the unions.

It's just like those who resent having to pay Social Security, Medicare, federal gov taxes - "we don't need no gvment handout!"  They love Sarah Palin.

    They are out there.

income, benefits and their lifestyle being what it is having anything at all to do with being part of a Union?

Do they give the union credit at all for the life they have been able to do live because of the union wages?

I do think you have to remember that being in their late 70's, they were active adults when the worst aspects of the unions were in full-cry:  graft, thuggery, threats, mob infiltration, bribes, murders, money siphoned off for gambling/drugs, etc.  --  some of that still goes on.

And in this case, many got their "attitude" from family & small town "attitude" and it was handed down from generation to generation, because that was the environment they were in.

They aren't capable of looking beyond misbehavior and attributing it to individuals, instead of a system.  Most of today's union leaders realized they had to clean up the system, to be taken seriously.  Richard Trumka is a great example.

Just like today, many people can't separate a few gay pedophiles, from the rest of gay people who are not child molesters.
The in-laws I cite come from the culture of western PA & northern WV & eastern Ohio, even as some have moved south to FL and NC.
