  •  The problem of rape in prisons makes it even more (7+ / 0-)

clear that we've gone way way overboard in locking people up. We can't afford the proper facilities or personnel for the huge number of people we incarcerate.
And it's true -- very few people care since people in prison are viewed as throwaway people.
There's no doubt there are some terrible people in prison. But there is a huge mixture of people -- from ones who were innocent of the crime to ones who were guilty but have matured and become better people; people with mental illness or impulse control problems that have never been properly diagnosed or treated; people who lived in violent situations and became violent themselves in order to survive. Many years ago I saw a study that showed that a high percentage of people in prisons head injuries (often from beatings as children) when they were younger -- so a proportion of convicted criminals may be suffering from the effects of traumatic brain injury.
No matter what, whether a prisoner is innocent or guilty of something horrendous, rape shouldn't be part of what happens to them in prison.

We're not perfect, but they're nuts! -- Barney Frank
