  •  Rural Michigan here. (22+ / 0-)

    Similar to Wisconsin.

    I am anti-gun and a vegetarian.

When I was a kid my older brothers carried rifles to school, strange as that sounds, lots of kids did. They were expected to bring home supper, usually rabbits or squirrels.

Deer were on the menu often. I hated geese.

But it was and is the way people feed their families. My poor parents had 11 kids. Many of my relatives live this way still and if the kids are hungry you don't much care that it isn't hunting season.

You cannot take away the right of these people to survive.

Unless he shot a rabbit or a pheasant or something after school the family went without meat.  And he hated pheasant--too dry and bland.

pheasant is not dry and bland...but personal tastes vary, I guess. :)

raised rabbits for food -- pretty much a special occasion meal (they tended to serve it when I'd be spending the night -- I still consider that a great honor). My friend's dad would pick out a good candidate and dispatch him/her with one swift karate chop to the back of the neck (dude was ex-Marine; looking back he was a racist bastard but good guy to have at your back in a bad part of town), then skin and prep it for dinner. Wasn't their only source of meat -- her mom was good at picking up deals at the store and stretching them out to serve a family of 5, or 6 when I'd stay for dinner -- but it was a pretty primary source. And rabbits are one livestock you can keep a lot of without getting too much flak from the neighbors unlike chickens or pigs, since many consider them as pets more than food.
