    Here's one (of many) thing I don't know:

    At the polls on election night, the clerk may have been allowed more options than for an absentee ballot ... or the Middleton clerk didn't know about options.

    If they didn't have the ballots, they may not have had the absentee envelopes that hold the ballots and those are a critical component of the voting, storage and review of ballots should that come to pass. I don't know; this is sheer speculation, but there may have been nothing to give you. And I could be dead wrong.

    That we are having to dig into obscure rules for voting over these last few years -- and getting voter ID shoved at us eventually -- we can see where this is going. The next handful of years will not be easy.

    In any case, what happened to you was wrong, but I would say that it's not a local problem -- but the result puts the local municipal clerks in the hot seat to take the grief and blame.

    Making it difficult. A few more days of no absentee ballots, a few more students be gone ...
