    •  yes (5+ / 0-)

asking police not to be violent without just cause is unreasonable.

What happened to "we have no idea about the context". And by the way he didn't  "assume everyone" was violent. He went after a guy holding a stick above his head. Whether the guy was acting violent or not, wielding a stick around cops is a pretty bad idea. I have a hard time having any sympathy for him.

and yes, we don't know whether or not the context makes the punch justifiable. the stick was the type that holds a protest sign. in the tumult, the sign may have been torn off, just as the first officer's helmet may have come off in the tumult. we don't know. we do know that the second officer was about to punch someone, and it appears to have been a guy who was holding a stick but who wasn't the guy who hit the first officer.

between whether a protest sign had been torn off of that stick or not in that situation. That is something that doesn't require any context beyond what's in the photo.

There is a chaotic crowd. A stick is being held up. Another officer has already been hit with one. My point is that it is unreasonable to expect an officer to wait and see if that person swings said stick at him in order for him to take action.
