  •  I compare Obama to Carter a lot. (2+ / 0-)

Both Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama were elected as  "palate cleansers" from the previous administration.  In both cases, the nation, reeling from 8 years of binge, was ready to purge.

In both cases, neither candidate was prepared to move as far left as the base had wanted.  And in both cases, the base was brutal in its criticism.

But bear this in mind: no Edward Kennedy has emerged this year to challenge Obama for the nomination.

    No one.

And it wasn't because the party supressed a potential challenger.  No one was remotely interested.

    Something to think about.

That said, I think (and Obama knew) that he had to be very, very good to be elected President in the first place--better than most.   On that measure, he was held to a higher standard.

He still is and that is always the case with the first black (fill in the blank).

It's just a way of saying that our country still has a long way to go to put certain things behind us.

"No, I'm being judged against the ideal. Joe Biden has a saying: 'Don't judge me against the Almighty, judge me against the alternative." --President Barack Obama, 12/11/11
