  •  HSBC is pretty shady (6+ / 0-)

I've had bad dealings with them in the past, also in New York City.

In 2003, I got a statement from them stating I was being charged for certain bank services I didn't use. I called up and was placed on hold forever, so I went to my local branch and demanded to know what happened. They said I automatically signed up for those services recently. I said I did no such thing and demanded to see the contract I must've signed. They said they didn't have it but they knew I'd signed it. I said, "I'm making a call to my attorney, then I'm calling the police. When they get down here I'd better see that contract with my signature stating I wanted these services or have a full refund for the services you charged me for that I didn't want."

They said nothing and just security guards standing near me while I waited. They thought I was bluffing, I guess - but when an actual attorney showed up 45 minutes later (I'm not rich enough to have an attorney on retainer, he's just a family friend & owed me a favor) that money was refunded to me instantly and they were very sorry for the mistake.

I'll give HSBC credit, they have ATMs all over the planet. If you travel a lot, it's worth keeping a checking or savings account with them for easy access to your money. Otherwise, stay FAR away.

three year car loan for my boyfriend.  After a year, the payment was reduced.  My alarm bells went off but he just made the reduced payments.

At the end of three years he stopped paying.  Since his dad had co-signed, he was the one whose credit was damaged.  MM/HSBC had changed the terms of the loan to four years without notice, except for reduced payments.

If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever.
