  •  A pledge all Democratic officials take, I gather, (3+ / 0-)

to not make Republicans feel bad. Runs counter to a bi-partisan atmosphere.

Also, one wouldn't want to use up dry powder, in case you ever needed it for a fight. So in a gun fight with Republicans we bring sternly worded letters, but no letter-openers.

It's near 35 years of letting Republicans define the terms of debate and the battle-ground. I can only guess that Republicans pay our p.r. people more than we do.

    •  Pay our P.R. people? WHy do you assume that? (4+ / 0-)

The Republicans have a well built, massively funded, 24/7 p.r. machine going, of which FOX "News" is only one facet.  They don't need to pay off our pr people; they just drown them out.  They're much more uniform and well-rehearsed than our guys, and much more adept at using facts (or pseudo-facts) in conjunction with emotionally charged messages. Democrats tend to trust that facts and numbers are enough.  They aren't.

This is an excellent post: succinct, info-packed, and clear.  I look forward to spreading it around.  But it'll only have the effect it should if it's part of a powerful narrative.  The GOP betrayed our trust.  They ran up the debt.  They robbed working people to give to the rich.  They ran the economy off a cliff.  And NOW -- they want us to blame the Democrats, and put the GOP back in charge so they can run this country into the ground again.

The Obama campaign video attacking Bain capital, the one focused on a steel plant, is a great start.  The steel worker standing in front of a closed plant at the end, looking weary and cynical, telling us that Romney will do for America exactly what Bain did for that plant -- that's a bull's eye hit.

"They promised us all kinds of things.  They gave us -- nothing."

This time around, the Democrats may be hard to drown out.

      •  Obama is the first one I've seen since (5+ / 0-)

maybe, Dean, who takes it to them, and so far that's mainly been around campaign time.

The Republicans should have been obliterated in the public discussion at least after 1996. Instead, they were treated as if they had a creditable, and respect-worthy position.

As recently as last year in the budget hostage situation.

Dems on tv, generally, haven't been drowned out. They just don't hit. They, at best, have tried to refute the Republican talking points, but never go on the attack. We always let them decide the battleground.

This is what DLC triangulation and centrism has wrought.

Even when we had King George the Cowardly Lunatic as an easy target we still played it softly-softly.

Maybe that'll change now that it's obvious to practically everyone in the Democratic leadership that the Republicans have meant what they've said for the last four decades -- they want to destroy the Democratic Party.
