    The derivation of nation, like that of native, suggests commonality related to circumstances of birth.  Even in English, the nation is properly synonymous with the people since all individuals share a common birthright.

    Surely Québecois identity is too complex to be summed up with any slogan, but a basic premise is that the Québecois form a nation possessing a common birthright.

    Thus, Québec's styling of its legislature as the National Assembly is no more remarkable than California's custom of prosecuting criminal cases in the name of The People of California.
