  •  I get angry every Memorial Day (8+ / 0-)

My anger is directed at the American Legion post in our small, northern Minnesota town.

They have a very nice memorial at the local cemetery with the names of all of the veterans who have passed.  For as long as I can remember our family would go there every Memorial Day, and Dad would always say "Someday my name will be there, and you kids will bring my grandkids here".

When Dad died six years ago, I contacted the Legion post to see what we had to do to have Dad's name added to the memorial.  I was told that because he belonged to a different post closer to his home later in life, they wouldn't add his name.

I was so frustrated!  This is the town he was drafted from.  My grandmother is buried in that cemetery (Dad was cremated, according to his wishes).  This town is where the telegram came to my grandmother telling her that her only son had been seriously wounded by mortar fire in Korea.  Yet, this is the town who won't honor my dad.

Anytime I've mentioned this to vets who belong to other Legion posts, they say it's appalling.  I've tried going up the chain of command to the state and national levels, and all they say is "Well, it's a local post decision".

I haven't been back to that memorial since Dad died.  I don't know if I'll ever go back.  I will, however, tell this story about the dishonorable behavior of the American Legion every chance I get.

Memorial Day just breaks my heart.

    •  I had a run in with the Ga ..Carroll County DAV (4+ / 0-)

about something similiar,  A young man was killed in
the WOT and then another vet was killed in Iraq from our hometown and the young man who died in Africa did not have his name added.

There were several orgs. in that county and each blaming the other and it was DAV that hit the button with me and the young man's Daddy who was a staunch conservative saw his son from Iraq's name had been added and the young man from Africa was not ..He told them to take his son's name off this was not right.
He in fact brought the attention to me.  I wrote some folks about it and his name was never added but they were naming a highway after him so.....that is something.
I know there is injustice in everything but when we can speak up it is best.  The man who lost his son in Iraq served in Persian Gulf, his Dad served in Vietnam and his Grandaddy in WWII.....Most 82nd airborne.
The other vet who died on a mission not in country was defended by the Father of the soldier from Iraq.  Quite a story and our little org presented a Certificate of Recognition to the family   I really understand

Do you think it would help if a bunch of us wrote letters? Not mean ones, but ones talking about the emotional value of honoring someone's service in the way they requested it honored?

      Really. This is wrong.

It was upsetting.....This was several years back.  I think it was disgraceful and I remember the young soldier's name was Samuel Large.....and the vet's father's name was hardegree.  Hardegree (cousin of Craig on here) used to run a paper and he was very upset over Large's name being ommitted off the wall.  I know that Stan was extreme right wing but don't think he is anymore.  His son was highly honored and justified but he even had a General trying to get Large's name on the wall.  WE could not make them understand the mission Large was on was part of the WOT.
