  •  Spong is a gem, and I'm an atheist (20+ / 0-)

Smoh, have you checked the UU denomination? I am thinking you are semi rural so there may not be one nearby. If you check the website, you can locate churches and fellowships near you. There is also the Church of the Larger Fellowship, which was started for those far from a church. It is also open to people who have and are members of local churches.

Note, almost all churches are large enough to have a paid minister. Fellowships are usually too small, but some never change the name when they get big enough to hire a full or part time minister.

The UU church I will be going back to due to the move was where the current head of the UUA, Peter Morales, was minister. He is our first Hispanic in that position. His successor is a woman who has been married to her partner for 25+ years.

especially atheists and agnostics, I try to spread a little info to those who might benefit.

There is often a resistance among them to ANY organized religion, which denies the good things that churches provide for our spirituality (yes, even atheists have something they might name differently, which is a basic human trait) and socializing, etc

So I like to share our version of Rodgers' famous line. "I don't belong to an organized religion, I'm a UU."

Where/what church? (OK if you prefer not to disclose location) I will be going back to Jefferson County Unitarian. It was my ninth UU church. Can it become eleventh? ;)

    •  An old friend's dad was UU and a career Army (10+ / 0-)

chaplain.  He was one of those guys who, as junior guys fresh out of the seminary, ran around on the front lines in the Korean War ministering to men who really needed a comforting word.  My friend said there were a lot of UU chaplains in the Army back then--clergy from today's more stodgy denominations usually couldn't be bothered.

Anyway, my friend said UU services welcome anyone, no matter what they believe.  I thought I was being a smartass when I asked, what if you're an atheist?  He said you would be welcome.  That was refreshing after growing up with the snide condemnations and petty assed bickering of mom's Lutheranism and dad's Catholicism.

'dogma'. If you click on the website link, you can find the 7 principles we affirm. Most UUs probably couldn't quote them off the top of their heads. They are general guides which were developed to get away from defining ourselves by what we don't believe.

Someday I will figure out for sure whether it was Channing or Emerson who told Unitarians as individuals to 'Write your own bible.'  I started a serious version of mine ~ 25 years ago, with routine updates for new insights, quotes, etc about every 5 years. Overdue for one now, which will be major with all the losses of the last 6 years.

I have to say there are also a large number of smart asses in the church too. UUs love to question. My daughter has a t shirt with "Smart" over a picture of a donkey kicking its heels.
