  •  When I was a CNA... (11+ / 0-)

I had a resident I took care of in a nursing home who had survived Dachau. He survived because his wife (who was not Jewish and not taken to the camp) was related to the Mayor of New York City, and said relative arranged his release after a few months. He would talk for hours about what it was like to be taken to the camp, to escape the camp, about the year or so he spent in the UK essentially as a refugee, and then his travel to the US and reunion with is wife a few years later once her passport was arranged. He had the tattoo. What he would not talk about was anything that happened in the camp. He said it wasn't suitable for a young girl's ears. Even as dementia took him he wouldn't talk about it, though I know he spent a lot of time in tears and sleepless nights. He was a very sweet old man and I miss him. I content myself with the fact that he's reunited with his long gone family now.

To the Holocaust deniers, I say go talk to someone who's been there, who's family was there, who lost family to the camps. Watch their eyes, if you can bear it. And then come tell me those horrors never happened, and I'll call you a fool and a liar.
