I have a habit of putting my son's face over Trayvon's. If I was his mother and he was dead, would I want to hear these jokes?

I live in fear of being Trayvon's mother. At any minute, for as long as I live, I could be his mother.

The mother of a dead black boy, murdered by racial injustice.

I never want to hear Matthew Shepherd jokes, either. Parents of gays live with a similar fear if they love their children at all. They fear they will get that call that their child is no more because of the way they were born and what is a parent's job, if nothing else but protection at the very least?

But you can't protect your child when anti-gay and stand-your-ground laws almost give people permission to hurt them.

sigh It's complicated but I feel what you're saying, kestrel.
