    and I hate republicans just on general principle, but percentage wise, isn't the 1.5 million number  just one half of one percent of the US population?

    Yes other countries may have more safety nets, but can you force every person to use them?  I would expect this percentage would be true of any country in the world.

    The US is the third most populous country, behind China and India.  The numbers will always sound relatively large.

    Now China--500 million people there  live on $2 a day, which is around 40% of the population.   More than the entire population of the US.
