  •  "Surprising Iowa" That's how I think of IA (13+ / 0-)

I lived in Missouri and loved it for 8 years but eventually made my way back to the northeast, which is where I belong.

But one of the things I learned in those years, and ever since it's been reinforced, is that Iowa surprises those of us who lean toward the stereotypical view of it -- and it does so often.

My friends in Missouri assure me that in the years following my departure in 1981, the growth of the wingnut fundamentalists' power is something I could not endure now. And they're probably right.

But I follow the Decorah eagles pretty closely, and from the social stream there, along with general news and politics, I still frequently remark, "Surprising Iowa." I might not be able to handle the fundies anymore -- to my great regret, I suppose -- but, unexplainably, many times over the years something about Iowa often beckons to me, and it's always surprising. I've never even set foot in the state, but something about it calls out my name.

(And no, I'm not drunk!) I envy you.

    Ich bin ein Wisconsiner!
