    Which is currently getting a complete rebuild of its east span and is meant to be a serious seismic upgrade.

    The Bay Bridge was supported by pilings that were sitting directly on bay mud, making it very vulnerable to shaking.

    The Golden Gate is anchored in rock - has to be to withstand fierce currents and winds in the deepest section of the bay. It has had seismic upgrades as well.

    Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

      I think in my mind I heard "bay" bridge and not being familiar with SF leaped to the thought that since the GG went across the bay that it was one and the same. It's all much clearer to me now with the googlemaps.
      I do remember the images of the squashed cars under the viaduct.
