  •  Using Giuda to commit fraud (8+ / 0-)

The "I can't believe he was nailed by another Republican" meme doesn't exactly apply because this is really about a CYA mentality and not specifically the allegedly honest Republican, Giuda.

The fact is that Bettencourt was using Giuda to lie that he had indeed fulfilled the requirements of the work study program. Giuda, an attorney, was being asked to attest that Bettencourt did complete the work study which would give the mistaken impression that Giunta had enabled that deception.

I'm not a lawyer, but my guess is that it is unethical under bar association rules. It may also be illegal but I have no idea. At the very least, Giuda didn't want to risk disbarment for enabling the very lazy Bettencourt to get a law degree under false pretenses.

The other reason I cannot laud Giuda is that Bettencourt STILL ended up w/ a job, which IMO suggests that Giuda was fine so long as his tainted link to Bettencourt was severed. Moreover, IMO is that O'Brien wanted to sweep this under the rug.

Personally, I think the law school should strip Bettencourt of his law degree, nullify his work as a student because of academic fraud, contact all 50 state bar associations, and do everything possible to ensure that Bettencourt never practices law or even attends another law school.
