I just think now that they have tacked to working for the Republicans they need to recognize it's pointless to lament the cutting of the social safety net. The RCC won't move the GOP on that. The GOP has no interest in helping the poor. They are quite upfront about that.

the opposite may happen. Despite the church's repugnant stances on women's and LGBT rights, there are some issues they have been consistently and stubbornly, um, Christian about, in ways that no evangelical church would be: helping the poor and immigrants, without regard to race or origin, and opposing the death penalty (the flip side of their anti-abortion position) come to mind for starters.

It's possible that at some point they will realize what a poor fit that makes the GOP for them, and I suppose it's also possible that they won't. The future of the church is plainly in great flux right now, and not even being a Catholic by heritage, I wouldn't try to predict where they might go. Including away, at least in the US and western Europe.

for immigration reform of the proposed inclusion of measures to help LGBT people. They've all but completed their move to the dark side. When the Dems don't toss the gays under the bus for them, I am guessing we'll see the transformation is complete. They'll oppose a bill that does tons of good for many, just to ensure a few don't have their suffering mitigated.

I think they're really lost in North America these days - can't figure out why people are so worked up over their protection of child molesters, can't deal with 98% of RC women ignoring the ban on contraception, can't deal with the rapid growth of acceptance of marriage equality.

Their work with immigrants has been a bright spot in all this mess, so if they abandon it they've pretty much lost their identity. They're not doing all that well in SA, either, where various pentecostal and evangelical churches have been making inroads based on how out-of-touch the church is with poor people there.
