    You cannot remove homelessness from root causes - the key one is mental illness.

    We tend to think of full-blown schizophrenia, etc. but in reality, many people who lapse into homelessness are 'functionally mentally ill' - and do not have the resources, financially and socially, to leverage themselves out of their homeless situation.  

    In other words, it is not a rational decision to allow yourself to become homeless and a lot of times the path that was followed provided several 'outs' that were not taken for various reasons that seem logical to the person at the time.

    This is not a popular view - but from some of the stories I've encountered in the non-profit world the last 20 years, this seems to be the thread.
