  •  I too have been homeless (3+ / 0-)

    (and still am technically -- I just don't sleep on streets or shelters anymore.  I just live like a vagabond.) and I too believe that it is possible to have empathy for someone who is experiencing something one hasn't experienced personally.  

    I will say that someone who has not suffered deeply in some way (and there are those among us who haven't) will more have trouble finding feeling pain  with rather than sympathy for.  

    And I have never been an addict and the only mental illness I've ever suffered from is depression and PTSD.  Which can be debilitating but not "insane."
