  •  I had to rely on my fathers words-- (12+ / 0-)

--from years ago, when I couldn't find a job I 'wanted'.

He told me something surprising: 'I've changed careers 3 times since I turned 40'.

This time around, I kept banging and banging-- for either a Marketing Manager's role or my fallback as a Graphic Designer.

But being unemployed and over-50-- are 'two-strikes' that automatically feel like 'strike-three'.

Just '3 call backs' and '2 interviews' in 18 months-- from likely 200+ applications.

And out-of-the-blue-- 3 weeks ago a friend called and asked if I wanted to interview for an IT position with his company.

And I've done what 'Dad did'. Changed careers.

Best of luck to you Rosalie.

    •  I'm in the same boat (14+ / 0-)

Unemployed and over 50 (actually over 60).  I've applied for and haven't gotten call backs on over 300 jobs, spoken to people that can help and in my industry we were hit the hardest due to the recession (it has to do with interior design/architecture).  I'm in NYC and a 99 weeker.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been successful and hopefully I will also.  Good luck in your new position.

I've had about 2 or 3 this year and, like I said, one was for a per diem job which I decided I couldn't afford to take.  I've been involved in politcs for years and have been applying for jobs here also.  I just applied for 2 the end of last week and no call back.   The only job I don't want and can't take is in the retail industry, and that's because I have a bad back and can't stand on my feet for all those hours.  Good luck and I do hope you get a job quickly.
